Mothers Outreach Network Board Opening

About Mother’s Outreach Network

Mother’s Outreach Network (MON) is a Black mother-led nonprofit in Washington, DC, with 501(c)(3) tax status, advancing family integrity, economic security, with a focus on access to justice for Black mothers and their children. MON’s strategy integrates three pillars: legal services and strategic litigation, guaranteed income research and tax justice, and mother-led advocacy with narrative change. MON employs a professional staff of attorneys, policy researchers, and administrative supporters.
Vision: A District of Columbia where Black families are supported with income, housing, and rights, and where poverty is never treated as neglect.
Mission: To empower Black mothers economically, keep families together, and challenge systems that punish poverty, especially child welfare and related legal systems.

Why Join Our Board ?

MON is seeking a new board director who shares our commitment to racial and economic justice and wants to play an active role in transforming the systems that
shape Black families’ lives. As a board member, you will help guide an organization doing urgent, constituent-driven work at the intersection of legal advocacy, guaranteed income, and mother-led organizing.

Commitments and Expectations

Board service at MON is ideally a 3-year commitment, reflecting our belief that meaningful governance takes time. You should expect to:

  • Commit an average of 6 hours per month.
  • Attend 10 regularly scheduled board meetings per year (most held virtually, with 1–2 in-person meetings annually in the Washington, DC area).
  • Serve as an ambassador for MON, maintaining familiarity of the organization’s current activities.
  • Participate in MON’s “Give or Get” policy: each board member is expected to contribute or help raise $500 annually. MON works with board members to find approaches that fit their networks and capacity.
