DC Budget Update
Here are some updates regarding the ongoing discussions surrounding the budget and our advocacy efforts for the District Child Tax Credit (DCTC).
As you may know, the Mayor’s budget will be released next week on Wednesday, March 20th, and it’s crucial for us to stay informed and engaged in the process. The DCGIC recently held productive meetings with the DC Council to demonstrate our support for the District Child Tax Credit and to explore ways various Council members can support its inclusion in the budget. Human needs should drive the city’s budget priorities, and there are sufficient tax revenue options to ensure that the FY25 budget is fully aligned with our community’s needs.
Our efforts to push for the inclusion of the District Child Tax Credit continue unabated. We are urging the Council to prioritize the needs of the most vulnerable DC residents. Additionally, we stand in solidarity with the Fair Budget Coalition platform, which advocates for equitable budget allocations that benefit all residents.
Additionally, Councilmember Zachary Parker has submitted a letter outlining his budget requests and revenue recommendations for the city. His updated request for the DCTC, aligning with the Tax Revision Commission’s preliminary recommendation, is particularly noteworthy. The proposed increase to $1,000 per child could significantly reduce child poverty in our city. Councilmember Parker proposes funding the DCTC by implementing several revenue-generating measures, primarily targeting the District’s wealthiest residents.
As we move forward, we must remain engaged and proactive in advocating for policies that will benefit our neighbors that are too often excluded. Stay tuned for opportunities to take part in efforts to reinforce our message to the Mayor and DC Council. Thank you for your continued dedication and support in these critical initiatives.
We’re hosting a virtual low-income tax workshop and clinic this season on March 25th from 5:00 – 6:30 PM! The event will focus on people in low-wage jobs and parents eligible for low-income tax credits.
